    Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and raised in Los Angeles, where he lived for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944, when he was twenty-four, and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp (1994).

    Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), ameriški pisatelj in pesnik, je bil glavni poet ameriškega velemesta Los
    Angeles, zato tudi njegova poezija izraža močan utrip tega mesta. Kot piscu proze so mu bile najbližje novele, ki jih je združene objavil v kar nekaj knjigah. Pisal je o vsakodnevnih pojavih kapitalistične družbe, kot so kriminal,  alkoholizem, prostitucija, narkomanija in revščina. Opisoval je ulično življenje in ljudi z najglobljega dna. Je kultna osebnost sodobne književnosti in ima velik vpliv tako na mlade bralce, kot ustvarjalce, saj se je kot umetnik razvijal v obdobju hipi generacije. V svojih novelah mnogokrat nastopa kot avtobiografski lik Henry Chinaski, sicer pa je spadal pod zvrst prestopniškega leposlovja.
