    -George Orwell-

    George Orwell (1903–1950) je pisec, ki ga večina ljudi verjetno najprej poveže z romanom 1984 in s satirično alegorijo Živalska farma. Manj znana so njegova druga dela, med katerimi posebno mesto pripada Orwellovemu knjižnemu prvencu Na robu in na dnu v Parizu in Londonu, s katerim se je zavihtel na literarno prizorišče. Orwell si je vse življenje prizadeval za izboljšanje položaja zatiranih in prezrtih in o tem je brez zadržkov govoril v svojih žurnalističnih in literarnih besedilih. Glasno in pogumno je zagovarjal socialistična načela in obenem nasprotoval tako komunizmu kot izkoriščevalski kapitalistični miselnosti. Socialni angažma in izbran pripovedni slog mu opravičeno podeljujeta status enega najpomembnejših družbenih vizionarjev in pripovednikov 20. stoletja.
