Opis

The popular paperback edition with a cover design by Tolkien himself, to complement the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings paperbacks. Includes a special preface by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, of the First Age of Tolkien's world. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part. The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-Earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor. Included in the book are several shorter works. The Ainulindale is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabeth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Numenor at the end of the Second Age and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings.

Jacket review
'How, given little over half a century of work, did one man become the creative equivalent of a people?' The Guardian 'Demanding to be compared with English mythologies! at times rises to the greatness of true myth.' Financial Times 'A creation of singular beauty! magnificent.' Washington Post 'A grim, tragic, brooding and beautiful book, shot through with heroism and hope! its power is almost that of mysticism.' Toronto Globe & Mail

JRR Tolkien was born on 3rd January 1892 in Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State (now Free State Province, South Africa). After serving in the First World War, Tolkien embarked on a distinguished academic career and was recognised as one of the finest philologists in the world. He is, however, best known as the creator of Middle-earth and author of such classic and extraordinary works of fiction as The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin.

His books have been translated into more than 40 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide. He was awarded a CBE and an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Oxford University in 1972. He died in 1973 at the age of 81.

Christopher Tolkien, born on 21st November 1924, is the third son of JRR Tolkien. Appointed by Tolkien to be his literary executor, he has devoted himself since his father's death in 1973 to the editing and publication of unpublished writings, notably The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, The Silmarillion, and the collections entitled Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-earth. He and his wife Baillie have lived in France since 1975.
